Background: The History of the German postal code

The concept of postcodes was first introduced in Germany in the early 1940s. The purpose of these postcodes was to facilitate the distribution of mail and improve the efficiency of the postal system.

However, after World War II, the use of postcodes was discontinued until the 1960s, when the West German postal service (Deutsche Bundespost) reintroduced them. At first, the postcodes were only used in major cities, but they were gradually implemented throughout the entire country.

In 1993, after the reunification of East and West Germany, the postal system underwent significant changes, including the introduction of a new system of postcodes. This new system consisted of five digits, with the first two digits representing the region or state, and the last three digits indicating the specific town or locality.

Today, Deutsche Post operates the federal mail and postcodes are an essential part of the German postal system and are used not only for mail delivery but also for a wide range of other purposes, including statistical analysis, market research, and navigation.
